Your numbers stay yours. Here is how we treat them.

Written in plain English, because a policy nobody can read protects nobody. If anything here is unclear, write to hello@backspace.cx and we will explain it properly.

What we collect

Two different things, and it matters which is which.

  • What you give us. Your name, your work email, your company, and whatever you choose to send about what you sell. If you fill in the demo form, that is all of it.
  • What your business shares. If you become a customer, whatever you decide to connect: sales, stock, prices, online orders. You choose what comes in, and you can stop at any time.

We do not collect anything about the people who shop with you. No names, no addresses, no card details. We work with totals, not individuals.

What we do with it

We use it to answer your questions and nothing else. It tells us what changed in your market and what to recommend you do about it.

  • We do not sell your information. Not to anyone, at any price.
  • We do not use one customer's numbers to answer another customer's question.
  • We do not use your information to train anything that is shared outside your own workspace.

Who can see it

You and the people you invite. Inside Backspace your information sits in your own workspace, separated from every other customer.

A small number of our staff can reach it when they need to fix a problem or answer a question you have raised. That access is logged, and it is limited to the people who need it.

How long we keep it

For as long as you are working with us, and no longer. If you stop, tell us and we will return what is yours and delete our copy. If you never become a customer, we delete what you sent through the demo form after twelve months.

What you can ask us to do

  • Show you. Ask what we hold about you and we will tell you.
  • Correct it. If something is wrong, we will fix it.
  • Export it. Ask and we will send it to you in a form you can use.
  • Delete it. Ask and we will remove it, unless the law requires us to keep a record.

Write to hello@backspace.cx or call +234 808 977 3397. We will come back to you within thirty days, and usually much sooner.

Where we operate

We are based in Lagos and we work under Nigerian data protection law. Where we use outside services to run Backspace, we choose them carefully and hold them to the same standards we hold ourselves to.

What we do not know

This is the part most companies leave out, so we put it here in writing.

Backspace sees a lot, but it does not see everything. We watch the shops and channels that share with us. We do not watch every shop in Nigeria, and we never claim to.

  • Every answer shows its coverage. How many shops, which products, what dates. You always know what an answer is built on.
  • Where we cannot see, we say so. Open markets and informal trade are not in our coverage today. We will tell you that rather than guess and call it a number.
  • We separate what we measured from what we expect. A result we have observed and a forecast we have modelled are labelled differently, every time.
  • We come back afterwards. When we recommend something, we measure whether it worked and tell you either way.

Knowing the edge of what we can see is what makes the middle of it worth trusting.
